Convert to scientific notation:
12 million
Count six zeros, move the decimal an additional two to the left: 1.2 x 10^7
Convert to scientific notation:
286 thousand
Count three zeros, move the decimal an additional two to the left: 2.86 x 10^5
Convert to scientific notation:
134 millionths
0.000134 = 1.34 x 10^-4
Explain how to convert positive numbers greater than one to scientific notation
A number > 1 means the exponent will be positive.

Count from the current decimal position, to the position immediately after the first number. That will be the exponent. Create the coefficient by transcribing the numbers, inserting a decimal after the first number.

23000 = 2.3 x 10^4
Explain how to convert positive decimal numbers to scientific notation
A decimal number between 0 and 1 will have a negative exponent.

For the exponent/magnitude, count right, from the current decimal to the space after the first non-zero number.

The coefficient begins with the first non-zero number, then a decimal, and then the remainder of the numbers.

Don't forget that the exponent is negative.

.0003408 = 3.408 x 10^-4
Explain how to convert positive scientific notation numbers greater than one to regular numbers.
A positive exponent indicates a number greater than one.

Move the decimal to the right, by the number of places indicated by the magnitude. Or, subtract the number of numbers to the right of the decimal in the original number from the magnitude to determine the number of zeros to add.

Note that every magnitude of 3 moves from thousand, to million, to billion, etc.

4.765 x 10^7 = 47650000
Explain how to convert positive scientific notation numbers less than one to a decimal number.
A negative exponent indicates a decimal value between 0 and 1.

Move the decimal left by the number of the exponent, inserting zeros before the first number. Or subtract one from the magnitude and add that number of zeros before the first number. Begin the entire number now with a decimal.

7.3524 x 10^-6 = .0000073524
Explain how to convert numbers or scientific notation that is negative.
The negative sign has no effect on the conversion. Simply carry the sign to the conversion.
Solve:
(4 x 10^8) - (3 x 10^6)
(4 x 10^8) - (3 x 10^6) =
(4 x 10^8) - (.03 x 10^8) = 3.97 x 10^8
Solve:
(6.2 x 10^4) + (4 x 10^6)
(6.2 x 10^4) + (4 x 10^6) =
(.062 x 10^6) + (4 x 10^6) = 4.062 x 10^6
If the coefficient in 5.364 x 10^8 changes to .05354, what is the new magnitude?
