Parralleling technique

The paralleling technique is also known as the extension-cone paralleling (xcp) right-angle or long cone technique

Five basic rules

1. Film placement- The film must be positioned so that it will cover the correct tooth to be examined

2. Film position - film must be postioned parrallel to the long axis of the tooth.

Film in the film holder must be placed away from the teeth and towards the middle of the mouth.

3. Vertical angulation - central of the beam must be perpendicular to the film and the long axis of the tooth

4. Horizontal angulation - central must be directed through the contact area between the teeth

5. Central ray - x-ray beam must be centered on the film to ensure that all areas of the film are exposed

Guidelines for film placement when using paralleling technique

White side of the film alaways faces the teeth

Anterior films are alaways placed vertically.

Posterior films are always placed horizontally

Id dot on the the film is always placed in the slot of the film holder.

Film holder is always positioned away from the teeth and towards the midline of the mouth.

Film is always parallel to the long axis of the tooth.

Discuss exposure sequence when exposing films using a parallel technique

Anterior exposure sequence

Assemble anterior xcp instrument

Begin with maxillary Right canine

Expose all maxillary anterior teeth from right to left

end with maxillary left canine

move to the mandibular arch

Begin with the mandibular left canine

expose all mandibular anterior teeth from left to right

Finish with the mandibular right canine

Posterior exposure sequence

Begin with the maxillary right quadrant

Assemble the post xcp instrument

Expose premolar film, then molar film

Without reassembling the xcp instrument, move to the mandibular left quadrant

Expose the premolar then molar

Move to to maxillary quadrant and reassemble xcp instrument

Expose premolar then molar

Finish mandibular right quadrant

Expose premolar then molar film

Discuss FMX

Contains both periapical and bitewing radiographs

average adult fmx constains 18-20 films
