Linea Alba
ANOMALY

Found on buccal mucosa, white line begins at corner of mouth and extends posteriorly at level of the occlusal plane
Lower Deep Cervical Lymph Nodes
Found on lateral surface of internal jugular vein, about 2in above clavicle
Lymph Nodes
Hundreds with boundaries of head and neck

Major function of lymphatic system is to monitor body's immune system. During infection they become engorged w/immune components. Can become enlarged during viral or bacterial infections and due to chronic conditions and malignancies
Lymphadenopathy
Swollen Lymph Nodes
Macule
Circumscribed flat lesion, identified by color
Maxillary Tuberosity
Tissue covered bony elevation just distal to last tooth of maxillary arch
Muccobuccal Fold
Deepest part of the vestibule
Nodule
Elevated, Non-blisterform lesion

Larger than a papule
Palpation
Digital- single finger
Bidigital- finger and thumb
Bimanual- finger and thumb from each hand
Bilateral- two hands
Papule
Elevated, Non-blisterform lesion

Pinhead to 5mm

May be pointed, rounded or flat-topped
Papilla

Papillary
Small nipple-shaped projection or elevation
Parotid Gland
Located on side of face below and in front of ear

Drained via Stensen's Duct
Patch
Circumscribed flat lesion larger than a macule; differentiated from surrounding epidermis by color and/or texture
Pedunculated
Attached by a narrow stalk
Petechia
Minute hemorrhagic spots (pinhead size)
Plaque
Elevated, Non-blisterform lesion
Slightly raised w/broad flat top
Larger than 5mm
Pasted on appearance
On outside of face
Polyp
Any mass of tissue that projects outward or upward from the normal surface level
Post-Auricular Lymph Node
Located posterior to ear
Pre-Auricular Lymph Node
Located anterior to ear
Pseudomembrane
Loose membrane layer of exudate containing organisms, fibrin, necrotic cells and inflammatory cells.

CAN be wiped off
Punctate
Marked w/points or dots

Differentiated from surrounding surface by color, elevation or texture
Purulent
Containing, forming or discharging pus
Pustule
Elevated, blisterform lesion

More or less than 5mm

Contains pus, giving it a yellowish color
Retromolar Pad
Dense pad of tissue just distal to last tooth in mandibular arch
Scar
Cicatrix mark remaining after a wound heals
Sclerosis
Induration or hardening
Sessile
Base is as wide as the lesion
Stensen's Duct
Drains parotid salivary gland

Located opposite maxillary molars on buccal mucosa
Sublingual Caruncle
Small papilla on each side of the lingual frenum. Contains openings of wharton's duct and bartholins duct
Sublingual Salivary Gland
Located beneathe the sublingual mucosa in floor of mouth, opposite mandibular canines
Submandibular Lymph Nodes and Salivary Gland
Submandibular Lymph Nodes are grouped around the submandibular gland, near the angle of the mandible

Wharton's Duct is the major duct of submandibular salivary gland, opens into mouth at the sublingual caruncle
Supraclavicular Lymph Nodes
Located in hollow above clavicle (supraclavicular fossa)
Drain part of thoracic cavity and abdomen

Virchow's Node is on left side and receives drainage from most of body via the thoracic duct. Early site for metastasis for various malignancies
Submental Lymph Nodes
Small accumulation of nodes beneath the chin
Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)
Articulation between temporal bone and mandible
Thyroid Gland
Endocrine gland located on lower part of neck, butterfly shaped w/two lobes joined together by isthmus tissue, lies along trachea. Converts iodine into thyroid hormones (thyroxineT4 and triiodothyronineT3). Only cells in body that can absorb iodine. EVERY cell in body depends on thyroid for their metabolism regulation
Torus
Bony elevation found on midline of hard palate and lingual of the mandible in premolar area
Trismus
Inability to open mouth due to muscle spasm or fibrosis of muscles of mastication and/or TMJ, motor disturbance of trigeminal nerve
Tumor
Elevated, Non-blisterform lesion

2cm/20mm or bigger

General swelling or enlargement
Upper Deep Cervical Lymph Nodes
Found on lateral surface of internal jugular vein about 2in below the ear
Uvula
Midline muscular structure that hangs from posterior margin of center of the soft palate
Ventral
underneath (inferior) part of tongue
Vermillion Border of Lip
Outline of lips, darker than surrounding skin
Vesicle
Elevated, blisterform lesion
1cm or less
Circumscribed lesion w/thin surface covering
May contain serum or mucin and appear white
Wharton's Duct
Major duct of submandibular salivary gland, opens into mouth at the sublingual caruncle
Depressed Lesion
Below level of skin or mucosa
Regular or irregular outline
Flat or raised border
Superficial or deep (greater than 3mm-ulcer or erosion
Flat Lesion
Same level as normal skin or mucosa
Single or multiple lesions
Regular or irregular form
Circumscribed flat lesion identified by color (ex.freckle)
Elevated Lesion (Non-blisterform)
Solid, no fluids, can be pedunculated or sessile
May be papules, tumors, nodules or plaques
Elevated Lesion (Blisterform)
Contains fluid and usually are soft and translucent
May be vesicle, pustule or bulla
Occipital Lymph Nodes
Located on back of head, close to margin of trapezius muscle
