Commonly used on architectural drawings. They allow the drafter to communicate ideas clearly and accurately.

Plan View

Views taken from the top of the imaginary glass box

Floor Plan

The most important drawing on a set of house plans. It is a simplified drawing that shows the size and arrangement of rooms, hallways, doors, windows, and storage areas on one floor of a home.

Exterior Elevations

Architectural drawings that show the outside views of the house.

Elevation View

Shows the finished exterior appearance of a given side of the house.

Section View

When a view is taken from an imaginary cut through a part of a house, such as a wall.

Detail View

Usually an enlargement of some construction feature

Rendering

A drawing with color to show a realistic view of the completed house

Model

A three-dimensional miniature of a design.

Quiet area

Typically consists of bedrooms and bathrooms

Multipurpose Rooms

Bedrooms that provide space for other activities, such as reading, studying, watching TV, listening to music, and working on hobbies.

Work Area

Includes all parts of the house needed to maintain and service the other rooms.

Work Triangle

The imaginary line that connects the three centers (stove, sink, and fridge)

Social Area

Provides space for daily living, entertaining, and recreation (includes entrances, dining rooms, living rooms, and family rooms)

Alcoves

Small recessed sections of a room, and balconies are sometimes used.

Traffic Patterns

The paths people follow through a room

Built-in Storage

Cannot be sold, replaced, or moved like pieces of furniture

Phantom Lines

Lines that show alternate positions, repeated details, and paths of motion

Visible Lines

Hidden Lines

Lines that show edges of surfaces that are not seen in a specific view of a house.

Center Lines

Lines that show the center of an arc or circle.

Dimension Lines

Lines that show the size and location of a dimension

Extension Lines

Lines that show the termination points of a dimension.

Break Lines

Lines that show that an object continues on, but the complete view is not shown.

Section Lines

Lines that are often called crosshatch lines.
