what are the 2 ways damaged tissues are repaired?
-Regeneration (replacement of damaged/dead cells w/ the same cell type
-Fibrosis (filling in injured area with the scar tissue) |
Describe the process of regeneration.
1.in an open wound, bv's are broken and bleeding occurs, 2.a clot forms and blocks the escape of blood, a scab forms and covers and protects the damaged area.3.Fibroblasts on either side of wound engage and together w/ surrounding bv's, they form fleshy projections called granulation tissue. Eventually the area is repaired and the scab falls off.
What do Bv's and Fibroblasts form in the process of regenerating skin?
granulation tissue: it looks like hamburger
What happens once the scab falls off the wound in the process of regeneration?
Epithelial regeneration will then resurface the injured area by increased mitotic activity of stratum basale cells at the edge of the wound.
What will occur if the wound is severe or large, and what is it?
Fibrosis, filling in injured area with scar tissue.
What is a severe example of scar tissue?
Keloid (occurs in genetically predisposed individuals)
What do large breaks in the skin require?
suturing
What bacterium is responsible for impetigo and scalded skin syndrome?
Staphyloccoccus aureus (Staph aureus)
What is impetigo?
A highly contagious skin disease of children.
What amy occur as a complication of impetigo, where the bacteria makes a toxin that destroy the STRATUM GRANULOSUM?
Scalded skin syndrome
What is the difference between impetigo and scalded skin syndrome
Scalded skin syndrome is where the stratum granulosum is destroyed.
What controls the infection of scalded skin syndrome and impetigo?
White blood cells and by the immune system.
