What is the integumentary sys made up of?
Skin, subcutaneous layer, & appendages of skin (hair, glands, nails)
What are the two layers of skin?
Epidermis & dermis
What is the Epidermis made up of?
layers of epithelial cells fused to form a protective layer of keratin material. Lacks blood vessels.
What does the dermis layer consist of?
smooth muscular tissue, nerves, hair follicles, glands & ducts, arteries, veins and capillaries, and fibrous elastic tissue.
What do sebaceous glands secrete?
secrete oily sebum which lubricates the skin and hair.
What do ceruminal glands secrete and where are they located?
wax, ears
What are the major functions of skin?
protection, body temp regulation, sensation, excretion, maintenance of electrolyte balance, vit D production and absorption
What are the functions of mucous membranes?
offer protection, helps rid body of foreign matrials and wastes, and absorb substances from their surfaces.
What is the first line of defense against harmful agents?
unbroken, healthy skin and mucous membranes
What are some factors that affect resistance to injury and desease of skin and mucous membranes?
age, illness, amount of underlying tissue

fluid loss= dehydration= decreased skin turgor
