Ask a question/solve a problem |
What questions are you trying to answer? What problem are you trying to figure out?
Make an observation |
What do you notice? What do you already know? What background knowledge do you have?
Form a hypothesis |
What do you think/predict will happen based on what you already know?
Conduct an investigation |
In this step, you’ll test your hypothesis to find an answer to the question. Make a detailed list of the steps of your investigation and be sure to include all the materials you will need. List the variables in your investigation– these are the factors you will change, as well as the constants – things that won’t change.

Record and analyze data |
What did you observe when your performed the investigation? Record the data you collected. What is the best way to record the data? Is it a table, a graph, a diagram, etc.? Did the results surprise you?
