Internet
A worldwide collection networks that link millions of businesses, government agencies, educational institutions, and individuals.
World Wide Web
One of the more popular services on the Internet;also called the web. Consists of a worldwide collection of electronic documents.
ARPANET
The network that the U.S Department of Defense set up that allowed scientists at different locations to share information and work together even if it were disabled or destroyed.
Host/Server
Any computer that provides services and connections to other computers on a network.
W3C
The World Wide Web consortium, oversees research and sets standards and guidlines for many areas of the Internet.
Access Provider
A business that provides individuals and organizations access to the Internet free or for a fee.
ISP
(Internet Service Provider) A regional or national access provider. Usually provides Internet access to a specific geographical area.
OSP
(Online Service Provider) Provider of Internet access and has many members-only features such as IM (instant messaging) or their own customized version of a web browser.
Internet Backbone
The major carriers of network traffic.
IP Address
Short for Internet Protocol Address, is a number that uniquely identifies each computer or device connected to the internet.
Domain Name
The text version of an IP address.
TLD
(Top-Level Domain) The last section of the domain name.
WWW
A widely used service on the Internet, consists of a worldwide collection of electric documents.
Web Site
A collection of related Web pages and assorted items, such as documents and pictures, stored on a Web server.
Web Server
A computer that delivers requested Web pages to your computer.
Web 2.0
Web sites that provide a means for users to have personal information, allow users to modify Web site content, and have application software built into the site for visitors to use.
Web Browser
Application software that allows users to access and view web pages or access web 2.0 programs.
Home Page
The first page that allows a Web site displays.
Downloading
The process of a computer or device recieving information, such as a web page from a server on the Internet.
URL
(Uniform Resource Location) The unique address that Web pages have.
Link/Hyperlink
A built-in connection to another relaocated Web page or part of a Web page.
Search Engine
A program that finds web sites, web pages, images, video, news, maps, and other information related to a specific topic.
Subject Directory
Classifies Web pages in an oragnized set of catagories or groups, such as sports or shopping, and related catagories.
Multi-Media
Any app that combines text with graphics, animation, audio, and video/virtual reality.
Graphic
A digital representation of nontext information such as a drawing, chart, or photo.
JPEG
A format that compares graphics to reduce their file size, which means the file takes up less storage space.
GIF
Also uses compression techniques to reduce file size.
Thumbnail
A small version of a larger graphic
Animation
The apperance of motion created by displaying a series of still images in sequence.
Streaming
The process of transferring data into a continuous and even flow.
Podcast
Recorded audio, usually an MP3 file, stored on a website that can be downloaded onto a compuer or portable media player
Virtual Reality
The use of computers to simulate a real or imagined enviornment that appears as a 3D space.
Plug-ins
A program that extens the capabilities of a browser.
E-mail
Transmission of messages and files via a computer network.
User Name
Unique combination of characters, such as letters or numbers, that identifies a specific user.
Mailing List
A group of E-mail names and addresses given a single name.
Instant Messaging (IM)
A real-time Internet communications service that notifies you when one or more people are online and allows you to private chat them.

Location on an Internet server that permits users to chat with eack other.
VoIP
(Internet Telephony) Enables Users to speak to others uses over the Internet.
FTP
Internet standard that permits the process of file uploading and downloading with other computers on the Internet.

Code of acceptable behaviors users should follow while on the Internet.

Spam
An unsolicited e-mail message or newsgroup posting sent to multiple recipients or newsgroups at once.
