What is data?
data is a set of raw facts and figures or a series of values produced as a result of an event/transaction
What is information?
Information is data that has been given a context or proccessed to give it a meaning
What is knowledge?
Knowledge is derived from information by applying rules to it.

what is the difference between direct and indirect data capture?
Direct data is a collection for a specific purpose. EG: barcodes being scanned on a product. Account details being read from a credit card chip.
Indirect data is a collection as a by-product from data collected for another purpose. eg: using data collected from reading barcodes at a supermarket till to work out stock levels
Define encoding data.
Encoding data is data that has been processed to produce information
What is lost due to coding and provide a suitable example?
Precision is lost due to coding. EG: people classed in a 24-34 age bracket might not produce a pattern of results you were expecting.
Why is encoding data used? provide 2 examples
The code is shorter, therefore less errors are likely to be made.
The code takes up less storage on disk and less main memory
Ensures the data is consistent.
