Why is UTI more prominent in women?
There is a strong relationship between sexual activity and UTI.
What is Cystitis?
Most common bladder infection.
What is Pyelonephritis?
Infection in the renal pelvis and kidney.
What organisms cause UTIs?
E. Coli and other Coliforms.
What is the most prevelant nosocomial infection and why?
UTI because of indwelling catheter use. Note that it is assumed that use of catheter for more than 1 week means patient has chronic bacteriuria.
What lines the bladder that helps prevent bacterial adherence?
The Mucopolysaccharide.
What is used to treat UTI patients.
Trimethoprim, cephalexin, or Gentamicin.
What is used to treat Ppyelonephritis?
Oral ciprofloxacin and gentamicin.
What are some common symptoms of UTI?
Frequent urination, urgency, and dysuria.
What is the main reason for recurrent UTIs?
Bacteria invade cells and form biofilms.
Genetic Predisposition in UTIs?
some women express carbohydrates receptors on epithelial vaginal cells facilitating uropathogenic E. Coli to adhere.
Symptoms of pyelonephritis?
Same as Cystitis, but additional abdominal tenderness, chills, fever, and renal tenderness.
