Strategies for Conflict Resolution
What are the most common forms of strategies used for conflict resolution?
1. Mediation

When conflict arises between two parties in an organization, a neutral third party will facilitate a hearing (and sometimes negotiation) between the two parties.
Mediation is typically used between unions and employers.


2. Grievance Procedures

A grievance is a complaint that union-management contract has been violated.

Once a grievance is filed:

(first step) involves a conversation between the filer of the grievance and their supervisor. If an agreement is not reached then:

(step two) a human resource representative becomes involved . Assuming an agreement is not reached after step two:

(step three) involves introducing top-level management to reach an agreement. Assuming a continued breech then:

(step four) calls for taking the case to an arbiter.

3. Arbitration

When a bargaining situation occurs (contract dispute, etc.) or a grievance is filed, an arbiter will listen to the arguments of both parties, gather information, and make a recommendation that both parties must adhere to.
