Given independence in 2011 – (98.98%in favour) – after 22 year conflict, 2005 comprehensive peace agreement,residents in south sudan towns now disputing over farming, land etc – problemsafter given independence, lack of control, ethnic violence, 1.5 milliondispalaced since, looming famine, weapons and sexual violence, long term vshort term? Future issues? Peaceful v non peaceful?

The 3 causes (Sudan):


Ethnicity – 3 regions in one –North, South Sudan and Darfur. Hierarchy (more powerful) = Arabic/paler skin
Oil – Lots in the South, howeverNorth profit (70% from China) – from Port Sudan. South should receive 49% ofrevenues but don’t – Sudanese government has Chinese backing = military supplies(bombs/helicopters etc.)

Rwanda Genocide:

- 8 stages of genocide – classification of ethic group, symbolisation,dehumanisation, organisation, polarisation, preparation, extermination, denial
- 2 ethnic groups,
Hutu’s (darker skin)and Tutsi’s (taller and light skin – more European)
- 1994, lasted 100 days – 800,000 people died
- The Hutus (90% of population) were put in charge after Tutsi’s had had powerfor many years – tensions
- Spark = Rwandan president (Hutu) shot down in plane – tried to overthrown theHutu’s, propaganda (radios)
- Hutu’s fled to Democratic Republic of Congo afterwards
