Anus
the opening of the end of the digestive system from which feces exits the body
Appendix
a small sac located on the cecum
Ascending colon
the part of the large intestine that runs upwards; located after cecum
Cecum
the first part of the large intestine; connected to the appendix
Descending colon
the part of the large intestine that runs downwards after transverse colon and before sigmoid colon
Duodenum
the first part of the small intestine; C-shaped and runs from stomach to jejunum
Esophagus
the long tube between the mouth and the stomach; uses rhythmic muscle movements (peristalsis) to force from the throat into the stomach
Gallbladder
a small, sac-like organ located by the duodenum; stores and releases bile into the small intestine
Ileum
the last part of the small intestine before the large intestine begins
Jejunum
the long, coiled midsection of the small intestine; below the duodenum and the ileum

a large organ located in front of the stomach; filters toxins from blood and makes bile and some blood proteins
Mouth
the first part of the digestive system where food enters the body; chewing and the salivary enzymes in the mouth
Pancreas
an enzyme-producing gland located below the stomach and above the intestine
Rectum
the lower part of the large intestine where feces are stored before they are excreted from the body
Sigmoid colon
the part of the large intestine below the descending colon and the rectum
Stomach
a sac-like, muscular organ that is attached esophagus; when food enters, food is churned in acid bath
Transverse colon
a part of the large intestine that runs horizontally across the abdomen
