Lester Pearson

1952 became the pres. of United Nation General assembly. Proposed first peace keeping force to solve the Suez Crisis, for which he received the Nobel Prize in 1957. He became one of our PM's from 1963-1968.

Jacques Cartier

he claimed the area in and around the St. Lawrence River dor France in 1534. He was not able to establish a permanent settlement.

Nelson Mandela

stood up against apartheid in Africa for which he spent many years in jail. He became the first living honourary citizen of Canada in 2001.

Leif Erikson

the first European to settle in what would become Canada were the vikings, led by Leif Erikson, establishig the settlement of L'Anse auc Meadows on the northern tip of Newfoundland c. 1000.

Raoul Wallenberg

posthumously became the first honourary citizen of Canada in 1985. He risked his life to save tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews during the Holocaust.

active in many peacekeeping missions. Leader of United Nations missions in Rwanda in 1994 to stop genocide, where about 1 million Tutsi were massacred by the Hulu in the space of a year.

before Manitoba would agree to enter into Confederation he was the Métis leader who led a resistance against the Canadian government to ensure that French language and culture were protected.

he was the French explorer and navigator who established a permanent settlement at Quebec in 1608.

John Diefenbaker

he was the Prime Minister of Canada when a federal law called the Canadian Bill of Rights was passed 1960, which incorporated many of the suggestions of the UDHR. However, because it was not prt of the constitution, it did not override existing provincial laws.

he was instrumental in negotiating Canada's constitutional independence from the British Parliament and establishing a new Canadian constitution with an entrence Charter of Rights and Freedoms

Tommy Douglas

as premier of Saskatchewan between 1954-1961, he introduced and worked towards universal health care for all Canadians. He is considered the "Father of Medicare" in Canada.

Ernst Zundel

he was deported back to his home country of Germany in 2005 for publishing hate literature denying the Holocaust.
