define macule:
macule is a FLAT, pigmented or erythamatus lesion.
define papule
papule = peak, dome shaped elevation that's < 5mm
define vesicle -
a vesicle is a fluid filled blister < 5mM
define pustule -
pustule = fluid filled blister with inflammatory cells.
define plaque -
a plaque is a flat, elevated area (like a plateau) that's > 5mM

if it were below 5 mM, it'd probably be a papule.
define bulla -
bulla is a fluid filled blister > 5mm.

if it were smaller than 5 mm, it'd be a vesicle.
what's going on with urticaria?
it's type 1, IgE mediated. Requires exposure to an allergen. Mast cell degranulation/histamine release. Gives you WHEALS.
ezcema - what is it?
red, papulovesicular oozing and crusted lesions. lots of subtypes
what are the subtypes of eczema?
1. allergic contact

2. atopic

3. drug related

4. photo

5 primary irritant.

note that contact dermatitis is under the umbrella term of eczema.
what drives eczema?
if it's atopic dermatitis, it's IgE mediated. If it's contact dermatitis it's cellularly mediated. .
what does eczema look like?
always in the acute stage, weepy and crusty.
talk about erythema moltiforme - what does it look like?
this is the targetoid one. can come from herpes, mycoplasmas, fungi. lots of drugs can cause it. have "multiform" lesions, with macules, papules, vessicles, etc.

from lecture -
cytotixic dermal necrosis, secondary to infections and drugs. Lots of lymphocyte infiltrate.

If 10 to 30% of body covered = Stevens Johnson

if greater than 30% it's toxic epidermal necrosis.

CELL MEDIATED.
Psoriasis?
Seems to be T cell driven, some inherited HLA's associated with it, not sure what sets it off. seen in elbows knees scalp. see pink plaque covered by silver white scale.

sometimes associated with RA.
what's lichen planus?
P's

Puritic, purple, polyagonal, planar papules and plaques.
pemphigus?
Lots of vessicles. middle aged and older. Tpype II hypersensitivity reactions! complement driven.

vulgaris = type II against desmosomes,

bulous = against basement membranes.
Dermatis herpetiformis?
rare, see urticaria dna grouped vessicles. Seen in guys. Also with celiac disease.
erythermia nodosum?
primary septal panniculitis. ill defined reddish nodules on legs, with infection drug use and IBS. malignancy.
tinea?
fungus. capitis and pedis.
impentiago?
honey color rust crusts. over erythematous base. caused by staph aureus. face first.
