Which cell type mediates transplantation rejection?
T cells
What is an alloantigen?
Self antigen that is different in different individuals

ex: MHC molecules
What is an alloreaction?
An immune response (reaction) to an alloantigen (MHC molecule)
What are the two different ways that alloantigens can be recognized by the immune system?
1. Directly - Host T cell recognizes unprocessed allogenic MHC molecules on graft APC

2. Indirectly - Host T cell recognizes processed peptide of allogenic MHC molecule bound to self MHC molecule on HOST APC
What are the main antigens that induce acute rejection?
Major and Minor Histocompatability Complexes
What are the 3 types of graft rejection?
1. Hyperactute - preformed antibodies react with vascular endothelium of graft. Activate complement, trigger rapid necrosis
-Ex: Blood Typing mismatch

2. Acute Rejection - CD8+ CTL's react with alloantigens on graft endothelial cells. Results in "endotheliatis"

3. Chronic Rejection - T cells produce cytokines that induce proliferation of endothelial cells/smooth muscles. Causes graft arteriosclerosis.
