Name 4 things that make up the first line of defense in the body. |
-skin -mucous -cilia -stomach acid -eyelashes -tears -saliva |
What is the lymphatic system? |
Network of glands a.d vessles that carry lymph throughout the mammalian body; helps to maintain the balance of fluids in the body |
What is a lymphocyte? |
A type of white blood cell involved in both cell -medicated and antibody-medicated immunity. (Includes B cells and T cells) |
What is a macrophage? |
Phagocytic white blood cell that develops from a monocyte; acts as a scavenger, ingesting dead cells and foreign material. Macrophages also stimulate other cells in the immune system |
Second line of defenses in the immune system uses _______. |
Phagocytes -cells seek out and destroy pathogens by engulfing them (non-specific response) |
What are monocytes? |
Largest cells first to come. -can leave vessels to become macrophages and are then stored in tissues and organs. |
What is the third line of defense in the body? |
Specific cell response -lymphocytes- antibody producers |
What are antibodies? |
Proteins that lymphocytes produce that recognize foreign antigens and attempt to neutralize or destroy them. |
Proteins |
What are antigens? |
Identification markers on cells |
Where are B-cells produced? Where do they migrate to once manufactured? |
Bone marrow Lymph nodes, spleen, and tonsils |
Where are T cells produced? Where do they migrate to? |
Thymus gland in fetus Migrate to Lymph nodes and spleen |
What do helper T cells do? |
Recognize the presence of invaders inside phagocytic cells and send a chemical signal to the Bcells to initiate an antibody response. |
What do killer T cells do? |
Destroy cells infected by foreign intruders as well as mutated cells by punsturing holes in the cell's membrane. |
What is the function of supressor T cells? |
Signal immune response to shut down once fight is over; if not, the immune system will attack its own body |
What is the function of Memory T cells? |
To remain in the bloodstream to act quickly to a recognized antigen. |
When pathogens invade, damaged cells release _________ to increase capillary blood flow to the area. |
Histamines -leads to inflammation |
