Plasma proteins include
antibodies, complement and other chemical mediators of inflammation
Neutrophils
AKA: PMN leukocytes, granuloctes.
Primary effectors of acute inflammation. 24-48hr effect, then they apoptose and get replaced by macrophages. Some continue to predominate in certain infections. |
lymphocytes
Involved in chronic inflammation >48hrs
Cell mediated cytotoxicity. (ex: t & B cells) |
Eosinophils
chronic inflammation against parasitic infections. Secrete major basic protein from their granules which are toxic to parasites
Basophils/Mast Cells
Produce histamine and other vascular response mediators. Can continue production of proinflammatory cytokines in chronic inflammation
