INtrusive Rock

Formed when Magna hardens beneath Earth's surface.

INside Earth. Cools slowly. Large crystals. Example granite.

EXtrusive Rock

Formed when lava erupts from Earth's surface, cools and hardens.

EXits Earth. Cools quickly. Tiny or no crystals. Example Basalt

Texture - coarse grained

Takes longer to cool, gives minerals time to grow, Intrusive rock.

Texture - Fine grained

Cools quickly, tiny or no crystals, extrusive rock.

Composition - Mafic

Dark colored rock rich in calcium, iron and magnesium poor in silicon.
