25-27 gauge
Needle length SQ
3/8-5/8 inch needle
Needle length IM
1-1 1/2 inch needle
Needle size Intradermal
1/2 inch needle
Gauge is also called?______. It depends upon the _____ of fluid
Diameter/ viscosity
Lenght depends upon the ______ and ____ of patient and type of _______.Use smallest suitable length and gauge
size,weight and type
SUBQ:If two inches of adipose tissue or more can be grasped, insert needle at a_______angle.
90 degree
SUBQ:If one inch of adipose tissue or less can be grasped, insert needle at _______angle.
45 degree
Faster medication absorption than S.Q. is related to the greater vascularity of the muscle.Less risk for tissue damage, but increased risk for injecting into blood vessels.
IM
IM Use ________ angle
90 degree
IM:_________ cc's is the maximum amount of medication per injection in a large well-developed muscle.
Three or 3 cc
IM:_______ cc's is the maximum amount of medication per injection in the muscle of a thin patient.
Two
When selecting an IM site, be sure to assess for: 8 ans
Area free of infection, necrosis, bruises, abrasions, major blood vessels, nerves and bones. Be sure that the volume of medication to be given is appropriate to the site.
IM site: ________Has no major blood vessels or nerves. Have the patient sit or place in supine position with knee slightly flexed.
Vastus lateralis site
IM:____________Accidental insertion into sciatic nerve will lead to permanent or partial paralysis. Need to avoid major blood vessels and bone. To relax patient: have patient prone with toes turned medially, or lie on side with upper leg flexed at hip and knee. Perry & Potter does not cover this site due to proximity to nerve & blood vessel.
Dorsogluteal site
IM site:No large nerves or blood vessels and less fat. May use front or back of "V". To relax patient, have patient flex knee and hip while prone or lying on side.
Ventrogluteal site
IM site:Used less due to small muscle and proximity to radial and ulnar nerves as well as radial artery.
DEltoid
Use for skin testing (PPD, allergy). Meds are potent; slow absorption is needed. May have severe anaphylactic reaction if med absorbed too fast.
ID
Site: should be free of lesions and relatively hairless.
Intradermal
Use inner forearm and upper back
ID
Angle of insertion is _________ degrees. Should see needle tip through skin in ID.
5 to 15
________that looks like a mosquito bite should appear after ID administration.
Small bleb
No pressure with alcohol after given. Pressure will push med out. Chart location of injection, time given, dose, when to read results. Circle site with marking pen. What type of INjection?
Intradermal
