3 Stages of shock are:
Compensated
Decompensated
Irreversible
Compensated shock is:
When the body is able to overcome low/inadequate perfusion via increased heart rate, respiratory rate and cardiac contraction force.
Decompensated or Decompensating Shock is:
When the body starts to lose the battle and increase in heart rate/contraction strength and increased respiratory rate are not enough to maintain adequate perfusion.
Irreversible Shock is:
The end stage where the lack of adequate perfusion begins to irreversibly damage the organs.
Compensated Shock Signs:
Anxiety and Restlessness (earliest sign), Tachycardia, Tachypnea, Cool clammy skin/Decreased body temp, Nausea, vomiting, weakness, slightly low or low BP(late sign)
Decompensated (Decompensating) Shock Signs:
Cold & gray waxy skin, decreased BP, Listlessness, confusion, apathy, slow speech
Tachycardia; weak, thready pulse
Decreased blood pressure, Decreased body temperature,
Tachypnea
Irreversible Shock Signs:
Confusion, slurred speech, unconscious
Slow, irregular, thready pulse
Falling BP; diastolic goes to zero
Cold, clammy, cyanotic skin
Slow, shallow, irregular respirations
Dilated, sluggish pupils
Severely decreased body temperature
Treatment for shock:
Maintain airway and assist in ventilations as needed, keep the patient warm, elevate lower extremities if no abdominal injuries, monitor mental status, pulse, respirations, BP, control bleeding. TRANSPORT, TRANSPORT, TRANSPORT!
