8 Cards in this Set

  • Front
  • Back
Muscle contraction
ONLY contract, antagonistic muscles(ex: tricep and bicep)
Muscle structure
linear myofibrils -> linear muscle cells -> fascicles(bundle) -> muscle
Muscle cells
have plasma membrane, many nuclei.
Sarcomeres
sections of myofibrils bounded by a z line. Contains contractile proteins (thick actin and thin myosin)
Contraction sequence
1. electrical signal to neuromuscular juncture
2. Acetylcholine(ACh) released from axom bulb
3. Propagates electrical impulse w/in cell
4. Releases calcium ions from sarcoplasmic reticulum
5. Myosin heads bind w/ actin & bend (needs ATP)
ATP sources
1.stored ATP
2. creatine phosphate
3. stored glycogen
Muscle activity
isometric (tension, not contracting) vs. isotonic (contracting muscles)
Muscle tension
number of cells in motor unit, number of active neurons, frequency of stimulation
