Advantages of using race
quick diagnostic tool, there is some correlation seen, drugs can target specific racial groups
Disadvantages of race
heterogeneity of race; no biological basis behind race/socially constructed; drugs can target certain races and thus be more inclined to generate drugs for those of higher SES; often self reported; sociopolitical tool without biological basis; different races can get different treatments
Advantages of ethnicity
geographical/ancestral commonality; biological foundation; can be used a quick proxy to find background information
Disadvantages of ethnicity
Variation between members of a group as well; if using ethnicity alone, genetic factors alone do not lead to neg health outcomes, also environmental factors
advantage sof genetics versus race
-genetic tests can replace race
-focus more on genotypes than phenotypes (difference seen in closely related phenotypes foreign born vs US born blacks
disadvantages of genetics over race
-cant look only at genes, but environment as well
Rosenberg study
more variation within the races rather than between the races
-divisions are arbitrary because human variation is continuous
-used microsattelites to find commonalities between 4-6 races
-however, 99% of genomic material the same for all indivduals
-admixture in US detracts bc no common ancestry
Catherine Lee: Race and Ethnicity in Biomed research
race is not well defined in biomed research, although often used
-consequences: attributing bio significant to race might lead to patient not receiveing necessary treatment
-racial inequalities are really rooted in social inequity
Goodman article "Why Genes Don't Count"
-gradual homogenization of white community
-race only accounts for small percentage of variation across groups
-social, political, economic approaches to address inequalities
Schwartz article: Racial profiling
-major difficulties in using only race bc it is a social construct
-subjective esp because often times self reported
A. Wood article " Racial Diff in Drug Respones"
-race/ethnicity should be used as a marker for underlying genetic determinants of health
