Vagina
tube shaped organ into which penis is inserted during coitus; receives ejaculate; birth canal; connects to cervix
Cervix
lower part of the uterus; flexible; expands during arousal
Skene's gland
female prostate; between wall of urethra and vagina; special erotic sensitivity; releases fluid into urethra
Uterus
holds and nourish developing fetus; 3 layers: endometrium (glands and blood vessels sloughed off during menstruation), myometrium (muscular, responsible for orgasmic and labor contractions), perimetrium (external cover)
Fallopian Tubes
tubes extending from uterus to ovary; pathway egg follows; fertilization occurs in infundibulum (area closest to ovary)
Fimbriae
finger-like projections toward ovary
Ovaries
two organs in the female that produce eggs and estrogen and progesterone; egg bursts out at each menstrual cycle and enters body cavity where fimbriae pick it up
Penis
sexual pleasure, reproduction, urination; tip: glans; shaft: main part; corona: raised ridge at end of the glans
Corpora cavernosa
spongy bodies running the length of the top of the penis; porous; hardened by blood during arousal
Corpus spongiosum
spongy body running the length of the underside of the penis; tissues of cavities that are filled with blood during erection
Scrotum
loose pouch of skin that contain the testes
Testes
gonads (reproductive glands; analogous to ovaries); manufacture sperm and testosterone
Sperm
mature male reproductive cell; capable of fertilizing egg
Epididymis
coiled tube where sperm mature located at the top and side of testes
Vas deferens
tube through which sperm pass on their way from testes and epididymis, out of scrotum, and to urethra
Seminal vesicles
saclike structures above prostate and produce about 60% of seminal fluid
Prostate gland
below bladder, secretes some of the fluid in semen; provide favorable environment for sperm and protects from acidity of vagina
Cowper's gland
glands that secrete a clear alkaline fluid in the man's urethra to neutralize acidity; site of pre-cum
Kinsey Report
Interview as wide of a variety of people as possible, with little regard to sampling (mostly well-educated white population living in the cities, Protestants); careful phrasing and establishment of rapport (example with the pimp); careful to keep anonymous and safe from possible prosecution; absence of probability sampling reduces accuracy (probability each member of society will have of being in sample), though refusals would still present problems
NHSLS
national survey using probability sampling for American patterns of sexual behavior; almost 80% response rate; face to face interviews with brief written questionnaires for sensitive topics; age range 18-59; minority group results not statistically significant
Masters and Johnson
recruitment of general population to have sex in lab; behavior and physiological responses observed and measured; participants interviewed (weeded out those with emotional problems or those too uncomfortable); might say something about the sexuality of those who elect to participate; also omitted sexually inexperienced; almost impossible to set up probability sample given high rate of refusal; practice round to be comfortable having sex in lab setting, physical responses then recorded for sexual intercourse, masturbation, and artificial coition (able to photograph inside via dildo); eliminates distortion, able to see what happens physically (though ignores emotional and experience aspect); may respond differently in lab setting
Moser
direct observation by attending S/M parties; advertised and rules communicated; did not obtain consent, though behavior was public
Pituitary Gland
region in brain that regulates levels of sex hormones
Hypothalamus
region of brain that regulates function of sex hormones (regulates pituitary)
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
hormone secreted by pituitary; stimulates follicle development in females and sperm production in males
Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
hormone secreted by pituitary, regulates estrogen secretion and ovum development in females and testosterone
Menstruation
shedding of endometrium, low P and E (triggered by sharp decline during luteal phase), high LH and FSH (day 1-5)
Follicular Phase
stimulation of follicles in ovary to bring egg to maturity; FSH increase, progesterone decrease; estrogen secretion which triggers next phase (day 5-14)
Ovulation
follicle ruptures, egg released, high levels of estrogen, inhibits FSH production, Estrogen triggers GnRH from hypothalamus which produces LH, low progesterone levels (day 14)
Luteal phase
LH stimulates follicle to turn to mass of cells which manufactures progesterone which thus inhibits LH; degeneration of mass thus lower levels of E and P; stimulates production of FSH (day 15-28)
Gonad (embryonic source)
homologous and analogous; ovaries and testes
Genital tubercle (embryonic source)
homologous and analogous (clitoris and glans penis)
Genital swelling (embryonic source)
homologous: outer lips and scrotum
Müllerian Duct (embryonic source)
homologous: degenerates in males, fallopian tubes, uterus, parts of vagina
Wolffian Duct (embryonic source)
Homologous: epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, degenerates in females
Urethral primordia (embryonic source)
homologous and analogous: prostate, Cowper's glands and skene's gland, bartholin glands
