Where does spermatogenesis occur?

Testes. Sperm is stored in the ductus deferens and stored and matured in the epididymus.

What is spermatogenesis?

-Production or development of mature spermatozoa.Occurs in the testes.

-Begins at puberty

-Takes 65-75 days, producing about 300mill sperm everyday

-Process involves mitosis, meiosis and spermiogenesis

How is an erection initiated and maintained?

Parasympathetic fibres from sacral portion of spinal cord initiate and maintain erection. The local production of vasodilator NO relaxes and smooth muscle of arterioles in erectile tissue. This widening allows increased blood flow to penis, keeping it erect.

What is the spermatic cord?

Muscle enclosing ductus deferens, blood vessels, nerves and lymph nodes.

What is the function of the cremaster and dartos muscles?

Allows accent and descent of testes.

What is a lobule in the testes?

Septa divide the testes into 200-300 lobules. Lobules contain 1-3 seminiferous tubules. In the spaces between s.tubules are blood vessels and interstitial cells.

What do interstitial cells do?

Produce androgens (male hormones) such as testosterone, androstenedione and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), when stimulated by the pituitary hormone luteinizing hormone (LH).

What is a seminiferous tubule?

Site of spermatogenesis; begins in the outermost layer and proceeds towards lumen of tubule. Contain Sertoli cells that support spermatogenesis.

What is spermiogenesis?

Maturation of immature sperm

Why are testes outside the body?

To keep them cool. Spermatogenesis requires temperatures 2 degrees lower than core body temp
