What are sugar alcohols?

- Sorbitol, Xylitol (class of sugar alcohols found in sugarless gum)
- ~ 2.6 kcals/grams - Large quantities of sugar alochols can cause diarrhea - Doesn't promote tooth decay unlike regular sugars, some like xylitol can even prevent. Usually sugar alcohols are nutritive sweeteners that contribute fewer calories (about 2.6 kcal/gram) than sugars. |

What is the goal of carbohydrates (CHO) digestion?

- Disaccharides are split into small intestine.
- Monosaccharides not digested. (just absorbed) |

What are strategies to deal with lactose intolerance?
|
1) No Dairy at all (lactose in milk)
2) Small servings, spaced out - ok for most. 3) Low lactose dairy - ex: hard cheese, buttermilk, etc. 4) Add Lactase to Milk! |

What are type 1 diabetes?
|
- Not make insulin. must take insulin; partly genetic & environmental.

What are type II diabetes?
|
Not use insulin well. Heavily genetic, though usually brought out by obesity. (also cause poor use of insulin)
Insulin drops blood sugar levels and use fat cells. |

How do you treat type I diabetes?
|
Treated primarily by insulin therapy, either with injections 2-6 times/day or with an insulin pump.

How do you treat type II diabetes?
|
Drugs - various that increase insulin use (oral insulin), sometimes not needed.
- Avoiding obesity is also a good way to prevent type II diabetes. |

What is metabolic syndrome?
|
A condition in which a person has poor blood glucose regulation, hypertension, increased blood triglycerdies and other health problems.
- Basically, person is overweight, blood sugar and blood pressure is high. -Blood sugar between high end of low syndrome. |
