What is Demography
The study of population distribution and change.
What is Population?
The total number of people who live in an area
What is a birthrate?
Number of live births each year per 1000 people.
What is Population Density?
The average number of people living per square mile or square kilometer of a specific area.

Population Density/ # of people living per square mile
What is a death rate?
Number of deaths each year per 1000 people.
What is Population Distribution?
The way the population is spread out over a specific area.
Ex. Since more people live in New York City than Harrisburg, PA, New York City's population density is higher.
How do you find population growth?
By comparing the birth rates and death rates of an area.
What is Push-Pull Theory?
A theory that attempts to explain why people migrate or move from one area to an another.
What are some examples of Push Factors?
Not enough jobs, poor living conditions, war
What are some examples of Pull Factors?
Better living and/or working conditions, better medical care
What is an immigrant?
People who move from one country to another.
What is migration?
Term describing movement of people from one place to another.

In the countryside
Where would you find an urban area?
In cities or towns
What is the difference between a direct democracy and a representative democracy?
In a direct democracy people vote on every issue. In a representative democracy the people elect officials who vote for them on issues.
