Bedside Swallow Assessment
Subjective assessment done by a speech-language pathologist to assess safety for oral diet with a variety of textures/ liquids.
Video Flouroscopic Swallowing Study (Modified Barium Swallow Study):
• assessment of oral, pharyngeal, and partial esophageal stages.

• Done in a radiology suite (hospital) utilizing barium coated liquids and textures.

Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES):
• assessment of pharyngeal phase of swallow, someesophageal stage.

• Endoscopic camera is fed through the nasal cavity through the nasopharynxand is held in the area of the hypopharynx during evaluation.

Aspiration
passage of food/liquid past the level of the vocal folds into the trachea. Can sometimes be expelled (cough), often will continue to pass to the lungs.
Aspiration Pneumonia
bacterial infection caused by foreign material (food/liquid) in the lungs.
