Theory developed by Psychologist Lenore Walker explaining how women can get caught in a downward spiral without realizing it.
Phases:
1. Tension building- minor battering occurs. She assumes guilt for doing something to provoke him and tries hard to avoid doing it again
2.Acute battering- spouse inflicts pain until he decides to stop, after the attack he responds in shock and denial. They both do not grasp the severity of the attacks
3. Remorse/Reconciliation- "honeymoon period", spouse is kind and apologetic for a while until she does something else to provoke the previous actions
