Compare the city states of Athens and Sparta. Consider the government, society, and culture of each. |
In the government both begin with monarchy. And Athens only citizens who own land held office. All adult male citizens met an assembly. In times of War they elected generals and nine archons, rulers who served one year terms. Draco created Athens first written laws that were harsh and severe. In 507 BC cleisthenes took power and turned Athens into a direct democracy. Sparta's government had several parts as well. Two kings were at the head of the government. One of the Army and went took care of matters at home. 28 wealthy male citizens over 60 years old made up a Council of Elders that proposed laws and served as Criminal Court. Assembly of all male citizens over 30 years old voted to accept or reject laws proposed. They also elected 5 ephors, they made sure the kings stayed with in-law and had control over education, for one-year terms. In society both Sparta and Athens had slaves at the bottom and no women could take part in politics. In Athens citizens formed the top group, they could be rich or poor, but only Athenian born men had full political rights. Medics were non-citizens because they were born outside of Athens. They were usually merchants or Artisans and pay taxes, but could not take part in government or hold office. Slaves were people captured in war and they were treated as property and were owned by Masters. And Sparta Society they controlled lives of its citizens from birth till death. Sparta had three social groups. Equals controlled the city-state, land was divided evenly for these citizens. How citizens were free, pay taxes, and served in the army with no political power. How Lots were the lowest group, they became slaves and Spartans decided how hell out should work in live. They use Force to control them. In culture both Athens and Sparta were thinkers. They worship their gods and respected people. They loved beauty, music, literature, drama, philosophy, politics, art, and sports. In Athens culture they wanted to take control of more land in Greece. They had a powerful navy and democratic values. In Sparta's culture they were content with themselves and provided Army only when required. They were a powerful land Army and had very militaristic values. |
