Ellis Island

The island in New York City where millions of immigrants passed through for a new life.

Angel Island

The island in San Fransisco where mostly Japanese and Chinese immigrants came through for a new life.

Navitivism

When one favors its native people of their own country than outsiders.

Chinese Exclusion Act


This act kept the Chinese and Japanese from entering the US in 1889.

Gentlemen's Agreement

This agreement (act) was made to allow the people (mostly Chinese and Japanese) to enter the US after the were examined for illness and other health concerns.

Industrialism

The movement from agriculture to manufacturing as main source of economic growth. This is when factories and shops became mass producers of goods and gave cheap labor to immigrants.

National Market

A nationwide economic system made possible by transportation networks (Railroads). As railroads were installed, you were able to transport good around the country and gain more profit and consumers instead of selling close by, you could sell all over. Making the economy boom.

Merger

The combining of several companies in a particular industry. This was created to form a Monopoly in which the bosses would gain more money and profit and would be more able to mass produce as moderate quality instead of minimal production at high quality.

Monopoly

When one person owned every aspect of a company(ies). This is when a owner of a factory or business owned everything including several companies and had little to no competition.

Union

An organization for mutual benefit. These were formed for mostly skilled workers so that if they were to go on strike they would have the numbers to overpower the company. However, the government favored the companies more and these unions excluded forgieners and unskillful workers.

Strike

A work stoppage. These occurred when employees or laborers were unhappy either with their pay, work hours, conditions etc. Strikes often failed as the government helped the companies.

Injunction

An order to end a strike. These happened in 1895 when former President Cleveland ordered an injuction on strikers who weren't working causing the economy to break.

Tenement Housing

The slums or housing shared by families with no plumbing or room. This happened to multiple immigrants causing death and poverty to many.

Urbanization

The development and growth of cities due to overpopulation. As more and more immigrants came to the US and its cities, this cause construction to sky rocket as many people were living without housing or work.

Progressives

A person who advocates reforms to confront the problems caused by industrialism/urbanization. These people were the people who went out and actually did something about the issues by going to doors and the government while others wrote and published about it.

Muckrackers

A writer who investigates books/articles that attack abuses such as child labor and/or corruption. These people mostly wrote about the issues and opened the eyes to the public about these issues and how people are living compared to them.

Reasons for Child Labor and the Affects

The reasons are they could fit in the small places adults couldn't, it was cheap labor and families needed the money. its affects are that many children died due to either work related injury or disease soon leading to death.

16th Amendment

The right for Congress to collect income taxes. This is for the government to allow it self to pay its members and to keep running. It was ratified in Feb. 1913.

17th Amendment

Allowed the rite to vote for a senators-direct election. This allowed citizens and legislative members to vote for their own representative. Ratified in April 1913.

Keating-Own Child Labor Act (1916)

States that children cannot be overworked, work in unsafe enviroments and had age restrictions. Its details are the child can only work 14-16 hours. 8 hours a day. 6 days a week. In Coporations/Mines you had to be 26 years or older to work and in factories or shops you had to be 14 to work.

Pure Food and Drug Act (1906)

Investigators went and published books as they went to food factories and wrote about it in "The Jungle." This caused public outrage and the Pure Food and Drug Act was formed as well as the meat inspection act too. Passed in 1906, and stipulations kept coming to keep food clean. (FDA was created). Companies were now responsible for telling the consumers what is in their product.
