Allusion
A reference in literature to a familiar person, place, or thing
Autobiography
An author's story of his or her own life.
Biography
The story of a person's life written by another person.
Round Character
A figure with complexity in action and personality. Complex, multi-faceted not predictable.
Flat Character
A figure readily identifiable by memorable traits but not fully developed. Recognizable type; lacks complexity.
Protagonist
The main character in a work of literature. Center of action.
Antagonist
A character or force in a work of literature that, by opposing the protagonist produces tension or conflict. Person or force working against the protagonist.
Antihero
An ordinary, modern man/woman groping through life.
Static character
A figure who remains the same from the beginning to the end of a narrative
Climax (in narration)
The high point, or turning point of a story or play.
Climax (In rhetoric)
The arrangement of words, phrases, or clauses in order of increasing importance.
Conflict
interplay of opposing forces

Genre

Irony

Plot
The action or sequence of events in a story. It is usually a series of related incidents that build upon one another as the story develops.
Plot line
The graphic display of the action or events in a story.
Five basic elements of a plot line
Exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution/denouement.
Theme
What the writer is saying about life or human nature.
Tone
The writer's attitude toward the subject the author is writing about.
Symbol
A concrete object that stands for an abstract concept
