Importance of Carbon

Carbon IS IN ALL LIVING THINGS

-CARBON IS NECESSARY FOR ALL LIFE

There are FOUR GROUPS OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS

-carbohydrates

-nucleic acids

-proteins

-lipids

Carbohydrates

aka: "Dietary fibers"

-It has 2 Functions:

○main energy source

○cell's structural purposes

can be found in fruits, vegetables, pasta, bread, etc.

Monomer: monosaccharides

There are 2 kinds of carbohydrates: simple and complex

Simple: immediate energy for cell activities i.e candy

Complex: stored energy for long term usuage i.e: pasta, brear

Nucleic Acids

Function: stores and transmits genetic info

i.e: dna + rna

Monomers: Nucleotides

The 3 nucleotides (of nucleic acids)

-pentose sugar

-phosphate group

-nitrogen base

The 2 types of nucleic acids

-dna

-rna

Lipids

Used to store enrgy and are important to cell membranes (i.e: steroids)

Proteins

Function: Everything

Monomer: Amino Acids

i.e: eggs, meat, beans

3 Types of Lipids

-fats

-oils

-waxes
