What is Homeostasis?

Homeostasis is the process in which your body maintains a constant internal environment.

What does Homeostasis maintain?

Ion content

Water content

Sugar content

Temperature.

How is ion content maintained?

Ion content is regulated by the kidneys. Ions ( eg. Sodium ) are absorbed into the body via food, then absorbed into the blood stream.

If too much of a particular ion is found in the blood it needs to be removed ( eg a salty meal with have too much sodium )

The kidney removed excess ion content from the blood and it is excreted in the form of urine.

Some ion content is lost through sweat.

How is water maintained?

There are various ways.

1) Through Skin as sweat

2) Through the lungs in breathing

3) Through the kidneys as urine.

On hot days of during exercise you will produce more sweat and so produce less urine. Urine will be more concentrated.

On cold days you sweat less and so more urine is produced. Urine will be more dilute.

How is temperature maintained?

Enzymes within the human body work at temperatures of 37 degrees.

Your brain is sensitive to blood temperature and it receives messages from skin that tell

It about skin temperature.

How is blood content controlled?

Eating food contains carbohydrates puts glucose in the blood via the gut.

Insulin helps to maintain the right level of glucose.

Exercise can help too.
