The Geneva Convention
this split Vietnam at the 17th parallel. This dealt with humanitarian concerns. The US and Vietnam both refused to sign it bc they didnt want to participate in national, unifying elections. If they did have an election, they knew it would become communist oriented
Diem Rigs Election
Diem rigs the election of Republic of Vietnam with US supporting his decision. He refuses to unite the country. People werent knowing who they voted for

Formed by northern Vietnamese. Vietnamese Communists. Branch of the National liberation front.
1963. Suspiscion Arises
-congress questions the leadership of Diem.
-Battle of Ap-Bac
-Buddhist Protests (showed people in US cruelty.. and that something was "wrong" with buddhist being burned.
Battle of Ap-Bac
Vietcong 514th Battalion and local guerrilla forces ambush the South Vietnamese Army's 7th division. For the first time, the Vietcong stand their ground against American machinery and South Vietnamese soldiers.
Turning points of late 1963
1. Kennedy was assassinated
2. Diem was overthrown- murdered
Gulf Of Tonkin
USS Maddox and Joy were attacked on July 31, 1964.
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
President Johnson was given a blank check to do whatever he wanted.. "to take all necessary steps"
**This marked the beginning of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War.
