What does HAART stand for?
highly active antiretroviral therapy
What does NRTI stand for?
nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor
What is CD4?
a type of T lymphocyte
How many people worldwide have HIV?
How many people are unaware of their status? |
*40 million worldwide
*25% |
___% of those people diagnosed with HIV already meet the criteria for AIDS.
40
What is the avg CD4 cell count at initiation of ART?
187 cells/mm
Among women, what are the majority of cases of HIV due to?
heterosexual contact
What are some risk factors for HIV?
*IVDA or sex w/those that use
*unprotected, at-risk sexual behavior (ie. MSM, sex workers) *other STDs *tattoos or body piercing w/contaminated equipment *occupation exposure *maternal HIV transmission to newborns |
What is the 6 stage process of the pathophys of HIV?
1-binding & fusion
2-reverse transcription 3-integration 4-transcription 5-assembly 6-budding |
What is HIV?
a retrovirus -- uses reverse transcriptase to convert RNA to DNA; uses genetic material of host cells for viral replication
During step 1, binding & fusion, what does HIV do?
binds w/receptors on surface of CD4 lymphocyte & fuses. Virus then releases genetic material which enters host cell.
What does reverse transcriptase do?
converts single strand viral RNA into double stranded viral DNA
What does integrase do?
hides the HIV DNA w/in the host DNA- "provirus"
What happens during transcription?
HIV genetic material constructed & HIV mRNA is formed
What does protease do?
cuts long HIV proteins
