Passchendaele |
British wanted to take pressure off of the French forces in the south.
The allies wanted to capture the ridge and to advance to the Belgium coast.
There was heavy rains which filled shell holes and the land become waterlogged. The equipment jammed and soldiers and horses stuck in the mud. It ended in a stalemate (hardly any ground gained). It was a bitter disaster for Canadians because they took 7km and then lost it. The shelling destroyed drainage ditches. |

Canada's Last 100 Days |

It was a final push against the Germans. It put the Canadians at the front attacks which proved themselves. Canadian troops shifted to Ypres to trick the Germans. Then the Canadians then secretly back to Amiens for surprise attack.
It was Allied victory. The battle of Amiens on August 8th was the turning point. Canadians advanced 20km in 3 days. There was the entry of the U.S. in 1917 helped reinforce and refresh Allied troops at the end of the war. Germans had overextended their army and supplies were running low. Germans retreated |
