Nationalism
- is devotion to the intrests or culture of ones nation.
- The war of 1812 created a wave of nationalist pride, loyalty of protectiveness throughout the Unites States.
- Between 1817-1825 the nation was entralled in an "era of good feelings"
The American System
Promoted by Henry Clay during this period was a program for economic self-suffiency for the U.S
This Plan Took Three Parts
1. Establishing a protective teriff. (tax)
2. Improving the countries transportation system, known as internal improvements.
3. Establishing a national bank to promote a single currency.
Sectionalism
is the loyalty to the intrest of your own region or section of the country, rather than to the nation as a whole.

At the Same time nationalism was unifying the country, sectionalism was threatning to drive it apart
Factors Giving Rise To Sectionalism
a. Geography is a role in shaping history (The environment shapes people, people shape the environment)

1. Climate, natural resources, physical features of an area determine the ways people make their living. These economic activities, in turn influence the political and social outlook of the area.
b. As the economic interest of the three sections grew more dissimilar in the early 1800's, Americas began to look at the political issues from a sectional (regional) point of view, rather than a national point of view.
c. Political issues that eventually lead to the civil war.
The North
depended on shipping, trade, manufacturing, mining, lumber etc. and small farms.
The South
depended on plantation system of agriculture, slave labor and trade with Britain
The NW / Midwest
depended on farming, most people lived on medium sized farms without the use of hired help or slaves.

4. Stated rights VS. Federal Government (Who makes the laws for the country)
