Three Worlds
After WWll the world's nations were grouped politically into 3 "worlds". 1st was industrialized capitalist (US and allies) 2nd communist (soviet union) 3rd developing nations (no superpowers)
Fidel Castro
A harsh dictator, ruled Cuba for more than 40 years. Eisenhower ordered an embargo on all trade with Cuba. He turned to soviets for economic and military aid.
Bay of Pigs Invasion
April 1961, trained CIA invaded Cuba at the Bay of Pigs. The us was humiliated because they were easily defeated.
The Cuban Missile Crisis
Soviet leader secretly built 42 missile sites in Cuba. JFK declared that the missile was a threat to the US cause they were so close. Many people around the world worried about nuclear War. Soviets agreed to remove the missiles in return that the US not invade Cuba.
Ayatollahs
Muslim leader who opposed Western influences. The Shah tried to weaken the political influence of them in Iran.
Ayatollah Khomeini
Leader of the Ayatollahs who was living in exile. More than 60 American hostages. War broke out between Iraq and Iran in 1980. A million Iranians and Iraqis died in the war before the UN negotiated a ceasefire in 1988.
Revolt in Afghanistan
Threaten to topple Afghanistan's Communist regime in the late 1970s. Led to Soviet invasion. US helped Afghanistan and gave them weapons to fight.
Mikhail Gorbachev
New Soviet President in the '80s who acknowledged the wars devastating costs. He withdrew all Soviet troops in the Middle East by 1989.
Nikita Khrushcev
After Stalin died in 1953, he became the dominant Soviet leader. His speech signaled the start of a policy called destalinization- purging the country of Stalin's memory.
John F. Kennedy
President of the US in the early '60s.
Détente
Policy of lessening Cold War tensions.
Richard M. Nixon
Vice President under Eisenhower, 37th President. He agreed to pursue Détente. He became the first US President to visit Communist China.
SALT
A series of meetings called Strategic Arms Limitation Talks.
Ronald Reagan
Fiercely anti-communist US President who took office in 1981. Moved away from Détente.
