Petroleum,Coal, and natural gas are major fossil fuels. During the industrial revolution, fossils seemed to be the ideal energy source. Steam Locomotives, the quintessential machines of the industrial revolution, used coal as a fuel source from early on to compensate for a lack of firewood and charcoal.

The first recorded discovery of coal in this country was by french explorers on the illinois river in 1679, and the earliest recorded commercial mining occurred near Richmond,Virginia in 1748.

Coal was important to the industrial revolution because it burned hotter than wood charcoal. The additional heat was needed in the boilers that ran the steam engines developed during the industrial revolution.
