Knights of Labour

Monopoly Laws
designed to stop merchants or traders fromcolluding with each other for the purpose of controlling or dominating aproduct market. British legislators expanded the application of the laws,defining unions as a method of monopolizing the labour market. Thus, under themonopoly laws, unions could be considered a means to restrain trade, and“criminal conspiracy” charges could be laid against union organizers.
Industrial Unionism
-focuses on “strength in numbers” and maximizing power byrecruiting as many members as possible, regardless of occupation, rather thanconcentrating solely on representation of a particular occupational group.Opposite idea to craft unions.
Craft unions
-earliest attempts to organize trade unions inCanada were limited to specific geographic areas and small groups of workers,usually those in a particular trade or occupation. Popular because: size of Canada (more practical to organize locally), means for tradespeople to control the market fortheir skills and thus to control wage rates, Canada's role as exporter,not importer. Market for exported goods increased demand forskilled tradespeople, increasing their bargaining power with employers
