BLACK POWER

A political slogan and ideology aimed at achieving self-determination for blacks


It rejected the use of non-violence saying violence was necessary for equality. Some saw it as a cry for help adn MLK condemmed the movement saying that it undermind the authority gained form using non-violent methods.

NATION OF ISLAM

Headed by Elijah Muhummed, believed that all people were originally black until an evil scientist created an inferior and inbred species of whites.


Malcom X was a prominent member for a while

BLACK PANTHERS

Most radical group with 2000 members. Believed that blacks should arm themselves and physically fight for justice. Killed 9 police officers.


Also fought for social justice, feeding breakfast to the poor - including white children.



STOKEY CARMICHAEL

Elected as head of the SNCC, he turned their non-violent view into one supporting Black Power and condemned MLK. He took over the James Merideth case - walking 350km before being shot.

WHERE:

BLACK POWER IMPROVED THE CIVIL RIGHTS CAMPAIGN

Black Power groups had a lot in common and all aimed at brining the disillusionment of blacks to national attention. Black Panther did a lot to help fight poverty and both MLK and Stokey agreed to support this. They produced a lot of art and shifted the attention North aswell as South.

BLACK POWER DIDN'T IMPROVE THE CIVIL RIGHTS CAMPAIGN

They lost a lot of support given their extreme methods and alarmed moderate opinion. They were responsible for the race riots. They gained negative media coverage. They criticized some civil rights leaders such a Roy Wilkins.

NIXON

TRICKY DICKY - CLEVER BUT UNTRUSTWORTHY


Republican, encouraged Blacks to vote for him as he needed support. He extended sections of what Johnson was achieving and ACTUALLY desegregated schools. He turned his attention to education and business and put funding into black colleges. By 1971 there were 81 black mayors and 13 black congressman.


HOWEVER!!!! --- He appointed a racist Supreme Court Judge who sympathised with Southern Segregationists. He also contrasted many leaders as he had right wing views. He helped McCarthy in his Witch hunts.
