French and Indian War (1754-1761)
Starts in America (George Washington), spreads to Europe. A fight over land from Appalachia to the Mississippi River. Doubled the size of colonies and gave huge debt to the colonies. Eventually widened into the Seven-Years War.
Undeclared War with France (1798-1800)
Began because of the XYZ affair (in which three men were sent to France to speak with French foreign minister Talleyrand), a naval war with France in the Atlantic and West Indies, ended in a stalemate because Adams pushed for peace, not "all out" war.
War of 1812 (1812-1815)
Against the British to stop the pirating of US ships, it was also known as the Second War for Independence.
US invaded Canada and burned Toronto, and British invaded DC and burned White House.
Ended “status quo antebellum” or the way things were before the war.
No more British attacks on ships.
England was defeated in the US, and France was defeated by England in Europe (war spread)
Cuban-Spanish-American War (1898)
Went to war:
Ideologically-Human Rights violation--> Women & kids in concentration camps (art-W. Randolph Hearst)
Economic-Tobacco & sugar
Strategic*-Violates Monroe Doctrine and we protect our hemisphere
We got Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico

Second Republican Party (1854-1861)
Formed after Kansas-Nebraska Act when the Whig party dissolved. Same beliefs as the Whig Party, (Loose Const, strong Fed, minority rights) except emphasizing anti-slavery expansion as most important part of platform. Formed in Ripon!
Chose Fremont at first convention.

Plessy vs. Ferguson (1896)
Supreme court validated the legal separation of colored people and whites
Part black, but not allowed to sit in white car.
Separate but equal facilities constitutional under "equal protection" clause of 14th Amendment.
Civil Rights Act of 1964
Brought in by Johnson, it prohibited racial discrimination in public and employment and strengthened school deseg. Did not strengthen voting rights (poll tax/literacy)
Third Vietnam War (1964-1969)
S. Vietnam/US vs. N. Vietnam/Viet Cong
Gulf of Tonkin- Supposed attacks on US Ships from N. Vietnamese torpedoes.
Johnson was given blank check to do anything he wanted.
Was not a declared war, unconstitutional? US supported war until Tet Offensive (Chinese New Year, 30 S. Vietnam cities attacked, changed view on victory) and My Lai Massacre (TV images; Calley ordered women and children to line up, shot by firing squad, several hundred)
Fourth Vietnam War (1969-1973)
South/US vs. North/Viet Cong
Nixon pursues removal of troops so South can fight their own war.
Also announces entrance into Cambodia, which we had been secretly bombing (officially neutral, but Viet Cong already there)
Violent protests at Kent State and Jackson State
Jan 1973, all troops removed
