Gag Rule
• They instituted a gag rule in the House of Representatives in order to silent abolition petitionists
• They were circumventing the constitution
• Outraged John Quincy Adams—he began using every opportunity to inject the institution of slavery into all sorts of debates even if it had nothing to do with slavery
• Eventually censured for it—defended himself for 11 days
• Joshua Giddings and Theodore Dweld wrote speeches for them
--gagging citizens rights to speak out against government (issue over petitions)
