they were used by rulers as an aid from ancesters to make predictions. there were three parts to the inscriptions found. charge, progastication, and result (usually all three parts are recorded on the bone)

the first part is the charge. the charge is the question that is being asked. this is a specific question and usually contains a yes or no answer.

the second part is the progastication, or prediction. During this part the bone is heated (with the question inside) untill it cracks. then these cracks are looked at and anilyzed by the king. with these cracks as a guild, the king predicts his answer or progastication

the result is whether or not the prigastication is correct. as one may assume, most records show that the prigastications have been correct. but there are some that show times that weren't correct

the shang are divine to their ancestors, nature, and di. di is above ancesters. it is almost like a GOD type figure. but people of the shang dynasty would never ask di directly for something. they would ask there ancestors to ask di. the most important ancesters to worship are the kings.

the zhou belived the the mandate of heaven or power given to the people from heaven is based apon morals. when king wen (of zhou) saw a constilation in the sky it told him to concor shang. he felt that dispite shangs great number of people over zhou, zhou still won because the mandate was given to zhou because of their high moral values
