How were city politics?
Very corrupt, and dirty. Progressives made secret ballad, and made laws to get rid of the City Boss' tricks.
What is a direct primary?
Election in which voters choose party nominees

Propose law, enough ppl sign it will get on ballad.
What is a referendum?
When you get the law passed and on a ballad.
What is a recall?
When voters can remove elected official from office.
Why was the period from 1870 to 1890 called the Gilded Age?
Because people worried that the glitter of American society was false. They worried that it was covered with a thin layer of gold. Gilded means coated in gold.
What major change did the Pendleton Act put into place?
It created the Civil Service Commission. Jobs had to be applied for rather than getting them through the spoils system.
What was the intended purpose of the Sherman Antitrust Act? How was it actually enforced?
It was supposed to keep business from limiting or destroying competition. It actually was used to rule against the unions and not businesses since judges favored trusts.
Who were the progressives and what were their goals?
a diverse group of reformers who believed in the public interest. They did not think that the public should suffer just so a few businesses and people could get rich.
