What is Imperialism?

Having many colonies spread around the worldhelps to make you wealthier and stronger. Downside to colonies: conflict between colonial powers (like Britain, Germany, France, etc.) is spread around the world

Who is the Gavrilo Princip?

Gavrilo Princip was a 19 year oldfrom Serbia.He was also a member of a terrorist group called the Black Hand. The Black Hand wanted Serbia to be joined with Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Who is Archduke Franz Ferdinand?

The assassination ofArchduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne in Sarajevo on 28 June, 1914 was the spark that led to the war.

What are the 5 steps to war?

- Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia July 28, 1914


- Germany, allied to Austria-Hungary, declared war on Russia on August 1, 1914


- Russia, bound by treaty to Serbia, announced the mobilization of their army


- France, bound by treaty to Russia, found itself at war against Germany and Austria-Hungary. Germany quickly invaded neutral Belgium to reach Paris as quickly as possible


- Britain, allied to France, declared war on Germany on August 4.

Problem: in the event of a war, Germany facedpotential war on both “fronts” – with Russia in the east and with France on the west.

Solution:The Schlieffen Plan – the plan specifically addressed a two-front war: France must be defeated first because Russia would take longer to defeatThe German army was concentrated to the north-westNo passage through the Alps, so Belgium would be the most direct route.

What was "The Schlieffen Plan" and what was the result?

Unfortunately, the French defence plan – Plan 17– resulted in a deadlock with the GermansResult: four long years of trench warfare in the north of France and Belgium
