about 9 mil people living in South.


most are plantation owners and white farmers that own small amounts of land (who can't afford slaves)


not a lot of black freemen. but about 3 mil black slaves.

why do most freedmen live near the capital?

bc the deep South isn't willing to free them

3/5ths compromise

1 slave counts as 3/5 of a person bc in some states there are more slaves than white people. however, the slaves still can't vote.

fugitive slave clause

if ur slave runs away, u had to return him/her to the slave owner.

describe what happened to the fugitive slave clause in 1793 and 1850.

slavery was eliminated from the last northern state.

what happened in 1807?

slave trade was terminated in Britain.

11 free states and 11 slave states. slave states had more representatives.

why was it a problem that the slave and free states were equal?

bc in 1820, maine and Missouri want to join and bc there's so much unclaimed area around them.

how do they solve the problem of Maine and Missouri wanting to enter?

the Missouri compromise. maine is a free state and missouri is a slave state. they also come up with no slavery above the 36° 30' lat.

something to remember..

during this time a lot of white people were Christian/v religious and white people were viewed as pure and as bringers of hope.
