AKA Francois Marie Arouet (1964-1778). Personified the Enlightenment. Wrote "Philosophical Letters" and "Candide." Helped establish the international reputation of the French philosophes.

Intended to summarize and disseminate all of the most advanced contemporary philosophical, scientific, and technical knowledge. Run by Denis Diderot. Was published in installments between 1751 and 1772. Ran to 17 large volumes or text and 11 more of illustrations.

|
Scottish economist (1723-1790). Expressed laissez-faire economics and spelled out the different stages of economic development and how the invisible hand worked in "Inquity into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations." Believed that central issues were the productivity of labor and how labor was used.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau
|
introduced morality and sensibility. Milestone was the "Social Contract." "Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains." Argued that in the state of nature, all men had been equal and that soverienty should not be divided among different branches of government.

A Vindication of the Rights of Woman
|
Written by Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797). Argued that women had the same innate capacity for reason and self government as men, virtue should mean the same thing for men and women, and relations between the sexes should be based on equality.
