The American colonies were very rich in the 1760s. Give one reason for this wealth.

By 1760, the population of the colonies was over two and a half million people, mainly due to the immigration from Britain, Ireland and Germany. The colonies were very wealthy and the south, in particular, was very rich due to the production of crops such as cotton and tobacco.

Explain the term 'constitutional monarchy'.

Eighteenth century England was a constitutional monarchy. This meant that it had a king, but that the king had to share power with the Westminster parliament. For example, in 1760, George III became King of England and, therefore, King of the North American colonies. But his seat of power in London was 3000 miles from the colonies and had to rule from a distance. To do so, he appointed a representative called a Governor to rule each of the 13 colonies. Each colony had an elected assembly like the English parliament advised the governor. This system worked for a time, but soon the colonies were not happy under British rule.
